Following the worrying news that fellow Voice FM presenter Daniel Langlish-Beard (right) had been diagnosed with cancer, and that it was spreading, Voice FM station manager Xan Phillips and D-Word presenter Peter Langton, decided to join 2024’s Movember.
“Danny is been a massive part of Voice FM,” said Xan. “His show Spectrum is always a great listen and give Southampton’s LGBQT+ community a water cooler to gather around. It is a topical show, with at times a difficult subject matter for a Saturday afternoon, however Danny and his co-hosts always broadcast with consideration of others.”
“Obviously we’re realistic that growing mustaches won’t cure Danny, but keeping people aware of how they can help cancer care and research through a fun campaign is a always a priority.”
Danny was diagnosed with kidney cancer in the summer of 2024 and even though the kidney has been removed, the cancer spread to one of his large veins.
Danny has nothing but praise for his care team. “The cancer team at Southampton general have been excellent. Lots of support at this difficult time.”
For Peter Langton, Movember is a regular event: “I always do Movember,” he said, “but there’s more of a push to do it this year as we have Danny in mind, so this is for you Danny as well as any other bloke out there with any form of cancer.”
And as for growing a hairy little rascal under their noses, both presenters are okay with the challenge
“It doesn’t feel any different now 19 days in,” Peter said, “only when I look in the mirror and the chin braves the cold do I really notice! People have done double takes and funny looks as I don’t sport moustache much but it’s all for a good cause.”
“I’m also okay with it” said Xan, “there’s no reason to complain, especially after seeing Danny’s scar. That’s when it really hits home, when you see how much surgery is required to remove a kidney.”
“Danny has been brilliant during this trying time, full of optimism, just lacking full strength, we’re hoping he can come back early in 2025 and continue hosting his brilliant show.”
Southampton Spectrum is on every Saturday from 2pm and is currently hosted by co-hosts Orlagh, Mabel and Carla.
