I Should Be So Lucky - Mayflower Theatre

Undoubtedly, the '80s and '90s stand out as the most unforgettable decades in music, owing much of their memorability to Stock Aitken Waterman and their prowess in crafting and producing chart-topping masterpieces.

Throughout their collaboration, they generated an impressive 13 number-one hit singles, collectively spending 33 weeks at the pinnacle of the charts. In 2023, they revealed their renewed alliance, announcing their joint efforts on an exciting new musical stage show.

This year, the trio celebrates an astounding four decades of producing hits, coinciding with the premiere of their musical, 'I Should Be So Lucky.' The production is written and directed by Debbie Isitt, a distinguished writer and director with BAFTA and Emmy awards to her name in the realms of TV, film, and theatre.

Picture this: what was supposed to be the happiest day of your life, a day you had envisioned and fantasized about for as long as you can remember, suddenly turns into a heart-wrenching experience as your fiancé leaves you stranded at the altar. This is precisely what unfolds for the main character, Ella. However, with a bit of encouragement, her nearest and dearest decided to join her on her honeymoon trip to Turkey.

Led by the remarkable Lucie-Mae Sumner, acclaimed for her roles in 'Titanic the Musical,' 'Mary Poppins,' and 'Chicago,' this stellar cast boasts a diverse array of talents and personalities. Their collective enthusiasm and energy set a benchmark, making this lively and entertaining show the most thrilling musical to grace the stage in quite some time. The musical selections include beloved fan favourites, delivered with such fervour and emotion that they have the power to elicit goosebumps. As if that weren't enough, the performance is sprinkled with genuine moments of humour, innuendos, and belly laughs, making it a true treasure trove of comedy gold.

The shining star of the show is Scott Paige (The Great British Bake-off musical, The Addams Family and Nativity!) who plays the lovable Michael. His comedic timing and delivery, paired with the superb writing ability of Isitt, create a perfect harmony that elevates each scene to a new level of hilarity and ensures the audience is in for an unforgettable and laughter-filled experience.

Tom Rogers, acclaimed as the Head of Costume on ITV’s 'Britain’s Got Talent,' brings his artistic prowess to the forefront with visually striking sets, scenery, and costumes. From a heart-shaped proscenium to multi-coloured hot air balloons and disco lights, these elements not only showcase creativity but also add a captivating dimension to the overall spectacle. Infused with brilliance, vibrancy, and unparalleled uniqueness, these visual components enthral the audience, enveloping them in a world of bright and colourful allure.

‘I Should Be So Lucky’ offers the ideal evening of toe-tapping, laughter-filled escapism. If you want to ‘Step Back in Time’ to experience ‘Love in the First Degree’, grab your family and your besties and head down to The Mayflower Theatre for the musical made ‘Especially for You’, running from the 23rd to the 27th of January.
