Review: Now That's What I Call A Musical - Mayflower Theatre

This musical shows the classic pains of growing up, chasing your dreams (and inevitably stumbling on the way), and the distance that drifts futures when real life hits. However, that's not to say this relatable journey wasn't shown without fun and laughter.

"Now That's What I Call A Musical" immediately immersed us in bright sing-along throwbacks, accompanied by neon lighting to reflect the trends at the time, and the rose-tinted optimistic outlook shared by young people across generations.

The journey and flashbacks of main characters Gemma and April were expertly relayed with euphemisms that had the audience giggling; hits that had us clapping and singing; and a predictable plot that allowed us to soak up the relics that featured such as the VHS store and tapes.

Last night's performance also featured a glittering and dazzling showcase from 80's popstar Sonia, which added to the list of cleverly curated cyclical plot points.

With a diverse range of dynamic performances including a seductive rendition of Tainted Love, an electric performance of Video Killed the Radio Star and a slightly hard (but not too hard) hitting version of Heart of Glass, this was a classic feel-good show with an enjoyable but not cheesy entertainment factor.
