Review: Pretty Woman - Mayflower Theatre

Pretty Woman follows the story of a young, lost, beautiful woman named Vivienne, who moves from San Francisco to Los Angeles to follow her dreams.

With a background of poverty, no luck with decent boyfriends and and lack of support from her family, she finds herself working as a lady of the night.

Whilst working the streets she finds safety and comfort in her best friend and roommate Kit ( Natalie Paris ), who also mentors her at work, providing her with all the most important tips of the profession.

Everything changes when Vivienne takes on a new client, a young, handsome businessman man called Mr Thompson who she finds wandering the streets of Hollywood Boulevard trying to find his way to Beverly Wiltshire Hotel.

If you are in need of a night out with a real rom-com feel, look no further.

Pretty Woman has it all, from the beautiful romance that brings a tear to your eye, to can’t-help but laugh-out-loud moments and even some rather raunchy intimate scenes - making this musical the ultimate girl's night out.

The set is fully focused on everything neon, colourful and sparkly that the 80s has to offer.

Likewise, the costumes will bring you back in time and make you love the nostalgia. From beautiful make-up to hairstyles that even Madonna would have been envious of.

The iconic characters of Vivienne ( Amber Davies ) and Mr Thompson ( Oliver Savile ) are everything you would hope them to be. But it’s the character that isn’t the couple that truly steals the show.

Ore Oduba is a true chameleon and has us in awe of his acting, dancing and comedy skills. With subtle ( yet hilarious ) hints referencing the star’s ‘ real life ‘ experiences making you feel like you’ve known him forever.

Even with a larger cast of over 20 individuals you can’t play favourites.

Each performer offers something different and special. Be it excellent comedy skills, opera-style singing, or taking on a true villain persona. They all make this show super fun, varied and impressive.

The music itself from the Grammy winners Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, will have you dancing and clapping along, and singing it long after the show is over.

Pretty Woman is a great excuse to get together with your favourite people, dress up as sparkly and colourful as you like and enjoy this light-hearted and fun night to remember.

The show is on at the Mayflower Theatre until the 27th of July.
