Universal Destinations & Experiences have announced today that they plan to bring their world-renowned Universal branded theme park and resort to Bedford.
The announcement brings the proposed plans of a multi-entertainment resort complementing several themed lands full of immersive storytelling, thrilling rides and innovative entertainment attractions. A 500-room hotel and dining complex is planned for the county town, which currently has a population of around 153,000 individuals. Bedford is situated centrally within the UK, surrounded by unspoilt countryside and can easily be reached from the busy transport interchanges of London, Oxford and Cambridge.
Being the first Universal-branded theme park in the UK and Europe, it is estimated that it would benefit our economy by generating £50 billion and creating thousands of new jobs, with approximately 80% of employees expected to be from the Borough of Bedford and surrounding areas.
There has already been strong support from local residents, alongside the national government. Highways and Network Rail are also planning to support several long standing local transportation upgrades to include construction of Wixams railway station and direct slip roads from the A421 to accommodate an active travel network around the site.
Projected construction is set to begin in 2026, subject to further planning approval.
